Unusual Architecture From Around The World

The world is full of incredible architecture, some amazing feats of engineering, and some simply awe inspiring designs that seem to defy our imaginations. We see architecture everyday, however it's those unusual and incredible manmade buildings that stay in our memories for a long time.

Below are some example of unusual architecture from around the world, some hundreds of years old, and other examples of modern works:

Taj Mahal, India

Located in Agra, India, the Taj Mahal was commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The construction began around 1632 and was completed around 1653, this mausoleum is made from white marble, and was recognised as a World Heritage Site in 1983. It is the finest example of Mughal architecture, which is a combination of Indian, Persian, and Turkish architectural styles.

Burj Al Arab Hotel, United Arab Emirates

Located in Dubai, UAE, this building has become incredibly famous not only for it's opulence and luxury but also for the fact it has been built on an artificial island, and connects to the main island via a private bridge. The building was designed to look similar to a sail filled with wind, and soars 321 metres high. It has also been featured in advertisements with several famous sports stars playing on the helicopter pad.

Guggenheim Museum, United States of America

Designed by renown architectural designer, Frank Lloyd Wright, who is considered one of America's greatest architects. The Guggenheim Museum in New York, is cylindrical in shape and features a ramped gallery. The design idea was conceived as the 'temple of the spirit' and is considered one of the worlds most important architectural landmarks.

Palace of Versailles France

The Château de Versailles, is one of the most beautiful examples of 18th century French art. Featuring extravagant structures such as the Hall of Mirrors, the King's Grand Apartments, and the Museum of the History of France. It also features the world famous garden and park as well as the estate of one of it's most famous residents Marie-Antoinette, which includes Petit Trianon and her personal gardens.

Sydney Opera House, Australia

Situated on the waterfront in Sydney Harbour, the opera house is a masterpiece of modern architecture. Designed by Denmark architect, Jorn Utzon, it initially challenged people's concepts of what should be placed in such a prominent position, however it's striking design it has become an iconic part of the Sydney skyline. Whilst it is also world famous as an arts and entertainment venue, it does also feature some limitations because of its unique design.
